Grace English medium School 
Ballamjhora, Assam, India

In rural Assam, India there is a wonderful school that has been in operation for many years. It is the Grace English Medium School and it serves students from the local communities and boarding students from far away.  In 2022 BTCV site evaluators visited the school with long time community partners Gulshan and Milona Mahto.

The school co-founders had worked for many years to create a better education opportunity for young students.  With a land gift from the National Forrest Service and the community the school was started in simple bamboo structures.  Parents invested in the school to show that they truly wanted a better option for their students education. 

With community support some of the temporary buildings were replaced with permanent brick and mortar classrooms​.  These rooms were sufficient but unfinished. 

In 2022 the first team of Changers arrived to Hand Deliver Hope in Assam.  Funds were given to support the finishing work and new bathrooms on the ground floor of the classroom building.  This greatly improved the classroom environment for both teachers and students. 

The team was able to experience many cultural exchange opportunities that included visiting the village market, trying local clothing, music, food, a visit to a local banana farm and dance performances by students. 

There is nothing better than a motorcycle ride along the river and into a banana farm!  Travel with BTCV is unlike any other experiance!

In 2023 the team funded and worked with volunteers from the school's parent-teacher association to complete plastering and floor casting on the next floor of the community-funded building.  But beyond the physical work taking time for relationship development and learning was critical for this team.  We visited the homes of enrolled students to learn stories from parents about why education is so important to them.  This understanding drives BTCV to continue our efforts each year to create better education opportunities!
